Vascular health

Vascular health refers to the well being of the blood vessels which are the pathways of the cardiovascular system. Blood vessels can become unhealthy through a process called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the build-up of plaque, which is often made of cholesterol and other fatty substances. This plaque can line the artery wall, blocking blood flow and possibly leading to a heart attack or stroke. Certain risk factors like high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and smoking, can put people at a higher risk for vascular diseases like coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease.
